There’s something sacred about a first date spot. It’s the ground zero of a life together. You walk into a bar as two strangers, and you walk out with the beginning of a map.
For Sasha and Dan, that map started on College Street. Specifically, at Bar Pompette.
When they told me they wanted to go back there for their engagement session, I knew exactly what the energy was going to be. We didn't start with cameras in their faces. We started with a round of drinks.
I’ve always said that my work is a heart of service. Sometimes that service is technical—knowing how to handle a camera in low light. But more often, it’s about protecting the vibe. It’s about letting two people just be together while I happen to be there with a camera.
We sat in the dim glow of the bar, talked about everything and nothing, and watched the neighborhood move outside the window.
Then, the light did that thing it only does for twenty minutes a day. That "golden hour" that makes everything in Toronto look like a dream. We didn't overthink it. We just stepped out onto the sidewalk, caught the glow, and let the city provide the backdrop.
Sasha and Dan have this rhythm. It’s effortless. No "chin here" or "stand like this." Just them leaning into each other, laughing at inside jokes I wasn't meant to hear. I felt less like a photographer and more like a professional third-wheel, documenting a Tuesday night that just happened to be beautiful.
We went back in, finished the drinks—because you don’t leave a good cocktail behind—and then just wandered.
We walked through their favorite corners of the neighborhood. I found myself looking for the small frames. The grain, the blur, the movement of College Street humming around them.
To me, photography isn't about the "perfect" shot. It’s about the feeling. It’s about being able to look at a photo ten years from now and remember exactly how cold the glass was and how warm the sun felt on your neck.
